Plano-convex lenses have positive focal lengths. They work best when producing real images at near infinite conjugates or where one of the conjugates is virtual. They outperform the equivalent equi-convex lens if the magnification lies in the range m < -5 or m >-0.2
The optimum orientation for most applications is with the curved surface towards the long conjugate.
